Ethical Reflection in Career Dilemmas

Career guidance often involves situations where values, responsibilities, or interests are in tension. In such situations, there is rarely one clear or correct answer. This model supports structured ethical reflection when facing these kinds of dilemmas.

The model can be used before, during, or after a guidance session—individually or together with colleagues. It helps practitioners slow down, clarify what is at stake, and make more informed and responsible decisions.

How to use the model

The model guides you through a reflective process:

  • The challenge – What is uncomfortable, and for whom? What is the dilemma?
  • Framework – What conditions, rules, or limitations influence the situation?
  • Obligations – What responsibilities and ethical considerations apply?
  • Alternatives – What are the possible actions?
  • Consequences – What might follow from each option, in the short and long term?
  • Intuition – What feels right, and why?
  • Support – Who can you involve to reflect or support your decision?
  • Debrief – What can be learned from the situation?

The steps are not strictly linear. You may move back and forth between them as your understanding develops.

What the model supports

Using the model can help you to:

  • clarify complex situations
  • identify values in tension
  • explore alternative courses of action
  • reflect on consequences for yourself and others
  • strengthen professional judgement and ethical awareness

A key reminder

Ethical reflection is not about finding the perfect solution.
It is about thinking clearly and acting responsibly when no option is ideal.
